After Michael Brown’s shooting in Ferguson, the opinion departments of Guardian US and the St Louis Post-Dispatch partnered to gather readers’ stories from around the world of being racially profiled by police. Our hope is that this sampling will help spur empathy – and then action, everywhere.

Having a low opinion of yourself is not ‘modesty.’ It’s self-destruction. Holding your uniqueness in high regard is not ‘egotism.’ It’s a necessary precondition to happiness and success.
We have fought too long and too hard to eliminate the wounds of racism and prejudice just to watch things regress. Until black people no longer have to fear both the cops and robbers, until we reform policing tactics everywhere, we cannot stay silent. For if we do, we will continue to read headlines like this: Black, unarmed and dead.
Denying that women are a victimized class is simply wrong. What else would you call a segment of the population who are systematically discriminated against in school, work and politics? How would you describe a population whose bodies are objectified to the point of dehumanization? Women are harassed, attacked and sexually assaulted with alarming regularity in America and around the world, and now even more of them live in states where, if pregnant, they can be refused medical attention or arrested for refusing C-sections.
People who are on the shit end of oppression are oppressed. Accurately describing this is not a matter of politics, but of truth.
We are waiting here to see if we are meant to live or die. Every day is another day of fear and destruction. If you don’t die, someone you know is likely to be among the dead. This is no life a human being can accept.

I just sent an email to my MP calling on them to call for an end to Israel’s massacre in Gaza, and for sanctions on Israel. It only took a minute using a model letter - please take the time to do the same.
All you have to do is visit http://act.palestinecampaign.org/lobby/sanctions and put in your postcode - easy as that.
Fantastic article on the current bombardment of Gaza:
ending with “What will be the end of it? There will be no end, just round after round, unless a political solution is adopted.
This would mean: stop the rockets and the bombs, end the Israeli blockade, allow the people of Gaza to live a normal life, further Palestinian unity under a real unity government, conduct serious peace negotiations, MAKE PEACE.
Latest casualty figures: Palestinians in Gaza killed - 405, 2400 injured. Israelis killed - 18 soldiers, two civilians”
The UN Security Council has called for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict centered on Gaza.
A council statement approved on Saturday by all 15 members calls for de-escalation of the violence, restoration of calm and a resumption of direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians aimed at achieving a comprehensive peace agreement based on a two-state solution. Full story here
